Conflict

CEO “Succession” is Really Regime Change

PE firm replaces Emmett Moseley, the founder, with their guy Gary.

Emmett’s a good dude.

Gary’s a good dude.

But there’s a political dynamic, nonetheless.

Factions form. Factions have favorites.

Emmett wants to focus on AI for their cement trucks.

He says AI can cook up just the right mix every time.

“Like a perfect roux,” he tells his people.

PE wants to exit in two years.

Gary’s got meaningful — winter house in Palm Beach — incentives.

He’s not trying for a moonshot, not trying to Elon Musket.

Gary’s got two years.

So, there’s underlying conflict with Emmett.

It’s civil, polite. Subtle.

But it makes Gary’s job more challenging.

The situation is difficult because it’s political and there are parties.

Therefore, it must be handled by political means.

And certainly not clumsily.

It must be handled prudently.

For the state of the company to be strong.
